About Åre
Åre of today
Åre is a prime modern ski resort but at the same time, an active and
well functioning community with about one thousand inhabitants in Åre
town. The commerce in the area is important and not only during the
skiing season, partly explained by the border trade with Norwegians.
In addition to the varied and substantial offer of services, a number
of manufacturing businesses have either been born here or transferred
to the area. The production of goods is mainly concentrated to outdoor
life (skiwear, leisurewear, snowboards /skis), the food industry
(cheese, chocolate truffles, reindeer meat) and souvenirs/ handicraft.
Åre has a well-defined town centre, mainly located around the square
with shops, restaurants and bars. Duved, to the west, is another
village with a long and interesting history whereas Tegefjäll and
ÅreBjörnen are functional, comfortable ski villages, built on the
slopes to produce ski in - ski out opportunities. The fifth village is
under development in the Rödkullen area.

Even if
Åre has been a traditional ski and winter resort for many years now,
there are more and more summer activities and festivals popping up.
Åre Adventure festival
and
Åre Mountain Mayhem
are two of last summer’s largest events which
clearly shows that Åre has the capacity to host event with more than
1000 participants. Actually Mountain Mayhem hosted more than
1500 downhill cyclists during this one week festival.
The
DOWNTEAM challenge will not have anywhere close to this number of
participants, but we aim for a large number of spectators and choose
to organize the competition at the same time and in cooperation with
Mayhem Festival.
